Based mostly on the info from this website I've been looking into which animals to choose. My first instinct was to avoid the animals most famous in Africa, such as the Lion, Giraffe, Elephant etc. and choose animals based on their appropriate characteristics for the characters. In saying that, I also want to avoid the obvious choices such as the cheetah for the runner and find animals a little more interesting.
In terms of mythology, Mbaba Mwana Waresa, the fertility goddess of Zulu culture takes any animal form. The hippo as the fertility goddess is a myth more common further north as far as Egypt. Mamlambo is the goddess of rivers "Villagers in the area claimed that the creature was 20 meters (67 feet) long, had the head of a horse, the lower body of a fish, short legs, and the neck of a snake, and that it shined with a green light at night. " That would be a fun character to draw! Just possibly not for an olympic brand.

I think these little Dassies would make a great character, they look like evil little plotting minions! But cute ones. [crowd]
And a Chameleon I think could make a great supporter character as I could change its colour to the SA flag colours [crowd]
I kind of wanted to do the Ostrich as a female character but female Ostriches are just brown and not as recognisable. Also, I don't want to do a fantasia where we ignore this biological fact
This is a Knysna bird. I really like the colour and patterns around its eyes! I think it would make a really cool character. [female]
This is a Lilac-breasted Roller. I think it's just really beautiful with awesome colours. [male/female]
For the male character I was looking at Kudu which are really beautiful creatures with amazing horns
Also looking a the Gnu (Wildebeest). They have pretty amazing big long faces
The of course animals like Aardvarks, Bushbabies and Bat-eared Foxes are great characters. I want to avoid making a female cat character as that seems a little generic.
